17 fertility clinics offering Genetic Testing (PGT/PGD) in Australia

What is Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)?

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) screens embryos for chromosomal abnormalities during IVF. By selecting chromosomally normal embryos, PGT can improve success rates and reduce miscarriage risk.

PGT involves testing embryos for the correct number of chromosomes. Chromosomal abnormalities are a leading cause of implantation failure and miscarriage. PGT helps identify the embryos most likely to result in a healthy pregnancy.

The Process

  1. 1Standard IVF cycle with egg retrieval and fertilisation
  2. 2Embryo culture to blastocyst stage (day 5-6)
  3. 3Embryo biopsy to remove a few cells
  4. 4Comprehensive chromosome screening
  5. 5Selection of chromosomally normal embryos
  6. 6Transfer of selected embryo

Benefits

  • Improves IVF success rates per transfer
  • Reduces miscarriage risk
  • Helps select the best embryo to transfer
  • May reduce time to pregnancy
  • Allows confident single embryo transfer

Who Is It For?

  • Women over 35 undergoing IVF
  • Couples with recurrent miscarriage
  • Those with repeated IVF failure
  • Couples wanting to maximise success per transfer
  • Those wanting to minimise risk of chromosomal conditions

Things to Consider

  • Additional cost on top of IVF
  • Some normal embryos may test abnormal (false positives)
  • Not all abnormal results mean the embryo is non-viable
  • Requires embryos to reach blastocyst stage

Frequently Asked Questions About Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)

What is the difference between PGD and PGT?

PGD tests for specific genetic conditions that run in families, while PGT screens for chromosomal abnormalities. PGT is sometimes called PGT-A (aneuploidy screening). The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they serve different purposes.

Does PGT improve IVF success rates?

PGT can improve success rates per embryo transfer by selecting chromosomally normal embryos. However, it may not improve cumulative success rates across all embryos. Your fertility specialist can advise if PGT is recommended for your situation.
