Leading Tasmanian Fertility Specialist & Director

Dr Irena Nikakis is a Fertility Specialist, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who has been Director at Fertility Tasmania since January 2017. Born in Greece but raised in Tasmania, she combines her scientific background with compassionate clinical care.

Training and Background

Dr Nikakis graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tasmania, followed by a Master of Forensic Science at the University of London. She completed her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with Honours at the University of Tasmania in 2004.

She trained in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the Royal Hobart Hospital and Launceston General Hospital. Since 2013, she has been undertaking advanced training in infertility at TasIVF. She is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and a Staff Specialist at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Areas of Expertise

Her special focus is in recurrent miscarriage and implantation failure and how to minimise the impact of fertility treatment to improve pregnancy outcomes. Other areas of interest include fertility preservation, endometriosis and PCOS as they impact fertility.

Dr Nikakis is keenly interested in using evidence based medicine to tailor treatment to suit each individual's or couple's unique fertility issues. As a mother of four, she is humbled to be part of her patients' journey to parenthood.
