A/Prof Lionel Reyftmann is a fertility specialist, gynaecologist and advanced laparoscopic surgeon with extensive experience in reproductive medicine and minimally invasive surgery.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) and holds the DESC in Reproductive Medicine – the French equivalent to CREI subspecialty certification. He is also an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong and Clinical Director of Genea Wollongong.
A/Prof Reyftmann takes a stepped, integrated approach to fertility treatment – beginning with lifestyle changes and less invasive options before progressing to advanced surgery or assisted reproductive technologies when needed. He is the Australian pioneer of fertiloscopy, an advanced minimally invasive surgical technique performed through the vagina without abdominal incisions.

Training & Background
A/Prof Reyftmann trained at Montpellier University Hospital in France – one of the oldest medical schools in the Western world still in operation. He held a staff specialist and senior lecturer position there for seven years before relocating to Australia in 2010.
Upon arriving in Australia, he completed a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery at the Sydney Women's Endosurgery Centre, training alongside leading surgeons including Danny Chou, David Rosen and Greg Cario. He also holds a Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology from Montpellier University.
From 2015 to 2020, A/Prof Reyftmann was the academic leader for Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Wollongong. He is a faculty member of the Sydney Women's Endosurgery Centre and a member of the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ), Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy and Surgery Society (AGES), World Endometriosis Society (WES), and International Society for Fertility Preservation (ISFP).
Research
A/Prof Reyftmann has authored or co-authored more than 30 international papers on topics including IVF for poor responders, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), endometriosis, laparoscopy and lifestyle factors related to infertility. His research background ensures his patients receive care grounded in the latest clinical evidence.
