Associate Professor Rebecca Deans - Pioneering Fertility Specialist

Associate Professor Rebecca Deans is a groundbreaking gynaecologist and fertility specialist with expertise in reproductive endocrinology and paediatric and adolescent gynaecology. In January 2023, she and her team performed Australia's first uterus transplant surgery at the Royal Hospital for Women, resulting in a successful live birth in December 2023. For her exceptional contributions to women's health, she was awarded NSW Woman of Excellence in 2023.

Training and Background

Dr Deans completed her medical degree at Sydney University and is a Fellow of RANZCOG, completing her speciality training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2008. She subsequently developed expertise in the subspecialty areas of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI) and Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology, completing this training in 2011. She holds a Master's of Human Reproduction and Human Genetics from Sydney University and a PhD from UNSW, with her thesis on Asherman Syndrome.

Academic and Leadership Roles

Dr Deans is an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, where she is involved in ongoing medical research and teaching. She works at the Royal Hospital for Women, Sydney Children's Hospital, Prince of Wales Private Hospital, and Life Fertility Sydney. She is the only appointed specialist in Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology at Sydney Children's Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Women, and the only surgeon in Australia performing buccal vaginoplasty surgery.
