Dr Steve Sonneveld is one of TasIVF's leading fertility specialists, bringing decades of experience in reproductive medicine and prenatal diagnosis to Tasmania. Many of his fertility patients undergo IVF after being diagnosed with fertility issues including unexplained infertility, and he supports them with continuing to try for a natural pregnancy while also investigating the best possible advanced treatments for their needs.

Training and Background

Steve graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Melbourne University in 1978 and completed his residency at Austin Hospital in Melbourne. He gained his MRCOG while working with Dr Jon Hewitt at Liverpool Women's Hospital in England, where he developed his interest in infertility. After returning to Tasmania in 1989, he was admitted as a Fellow of RANZCOG in 1990 and joined TasIVF. His previous mentors at TasIVF included Dr Rod Watkins and Dr Geoff Bradfield.

Areas of Expertise

Over the last 15 years, Dr Sonneveld has developed a strong interest in antenatal screening for genetic abnormalities, including chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and amniocentesis. He has carried out more than 2,000 procedures in this area. He also offers non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPT) and cystic fibrosis carrier screening.
