Prof William Ledger is an internationally renowned fertility specialist and gynaecologist with over 30 years of experience in reproductive medicine. Known as "the friendly face of IVF," he is one of Australia's most published and highly regarded fertility experts.
He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (London) and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, with subspecialty certification in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (CREI). He currently practises at City Fertility and Rainbow Fertility in Sydney CBD.
Prof Ledger is known for his approachable, caring manner and his exceptional depth of knowledge in fertility medicine. He brings the most modern advances in reproductive science into his clinical practice to give patients the best possible outcomes.

Training & Background
Prof Ledger was a medical student and DPhil student at Christ Church and Green College, University of Oxford. Following graduation and award of his DPhil in 1983, he trained at the Jessop Hospital for Women (University of Sheffield) and Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion in Edinburgh, where he completed subspecialist training in reproductive medicine.
He held the position of Reader in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Oxford from 1993 to 1999, during which time he was Fellow and Dean of Green College. He then became Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Sheffield before relocating to Sydney in 2011.
Prof Ledger is currently Head and Professor of the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of New South Wales, Director of Reproductive Medicine at the Royal Hospital for Women, and founder of the Fertility and Research Centre (FRC) – a joint venture providing translational research and Australia's only statewide oncofertility service.
He was a Member of the UK Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority for five years and Chair of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Examinations and Assessment Committee.
Research
Prof Ledger is the most published fertility specialist in NSW, with over 300 peer-reviewed papers and journal articles, more than 50 book chapters, and 16 co-authored books including the 2020 Oxford Textbook of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. His research interests span IVF and assisted reproduction, reproductive ageing, endometriosis, PCOS, oncofertility, and health economics of infertility. His research background ensures his patients receive care grounded in the latest clinical evidence.
